Changing face of Australia: Our Chinese-born population is set to overtake the E

2019-09-18 08:03:48 (Author: SAME) Share

There will soon be more Chinese-born people than English-born people in Australia.

The Chinese population grew by 50 per cent from 2013 to 2018 to reach 650,000.

Meanwhile, the English-born population declined from more than one million to 992,000.

If this trajectory continues, the Chinese will outnumber the English by 2023.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics catagorises English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish immigrants separately even though all are from the United Kingdom.

Australia's Indian-born population is also increasing and hit 592,000 last year, overtaking the number of New Zealanders of which there are 568,000.

Brazilian immigration increased by 130 per cent to hit 46,500 and the number of Nigerians almost doubled to reach 12,500.

Total migration from North Africa and the Middle East increased by 22 per cent to 469,000.

At the same time, the number of immigrants from England, Ireland, Germany, Greece Italy and Scandinavia, as well as Singapore, South Korea and Japan is declining.

The Irish population, for example, fell nine per cent to just 87,000.

The figures were revealed in April by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which defines a migrant as someone in Australia for a year or more regardless of visa or citizenship.

The stats showed that more than seven million Australians, nearly 30 per cent of the total population, are foreign-born.

Australia's population reached the 25 million mark in August 2018.

Almost one million migrants, or four per cent of the population, hail from England.

Next is China, with more than 650,000 migrants living in Australia.

India is a close third with more than 590,000 people, or 2.4 per cent of the nation, calling the sunburnt country home.

Assistant Director of Migration Statistics, Neil Scott, said the majority of migrants have traditionally hailed from the UK.

However, the number of English migrants has dropped from more than one million in 2014 to 992,000, he said.

'Australia's multicultural society is made up of migrants born in every country around the world,' he said.

'Although almost 18 million Australians were born here, our society is continuing to become more culturally diverse over time.'
